From the Classroom to the Community: Why Networks Matter

On 26 May, our vice president Jakki Goodall had the pleasure of returning to Maroochydore State High School to speak with their Year 12 students. After such a warm and positive reception last year, it was a privilege for Jakki to be invited back to continue the conversation around connection, community, and the important role young people play in shaping their futures, right here on the Sunshine Coast.

Jakki shared how networking isn’t just for business owners or professionals. It’s something students can start doing now. Whether their plans involve trades, university, launching a business, or heading straight into the workforce, building relationships early can open doors, accelerate growth, and boost confidence. The Chamber exists to support people at every stage, not only once they have a title or a LinkedIn profile, but right from the start.

During the session, Jakki also spoke about the Chamber’s long-standing Student Membership. This affordable and accessible option costs just $50 per year and gives students access to our events, updates, and the broader local business community. It’s a powerful way to begin learning, forming connections, and stepping into professional spaces as they transition into their workplace or study.

To bring this idea to life, we ran a short activity where students grouped together based on their post-school goals. Each group discussed who they already knew in those fields either a parent, a neighbour, a friend and how those personal connections could lead to insight, advice, or even job opportunities.

A big thank you to Keirdre Oakes-Ferguson for once again coordinating this opportunity. The Maroochydore Chamber remains committed to supporting emerging talent and future leaders, and we look forward to welcoming more students into our network as they prepare for life beyond school.
