Insights and Inspiration with Janine Allis

The Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce was thrilled to welcome business icon Janine Allis as the keynote speaker at last week’s breakfast event – and she did not disappoint. With a blend of sharp insights, refreshing honesty and plenty of humour, Janine shared a candid look at her life, her entrepreneurial journey and the mindset that helped her build one of Australia’s most recognised retail brands, Boost Juice.

While she touched on everything from her unconventional upbringing to selling her family home to fund her business, the strongest messages of the morning centred on mindset, people, adaptability and the customer experience.

A Journey Built on Curiosity and Courage

Janine opened by reminding the room that she doesn’t consider herself an “expert.” In fact, her entire career has been shaped by a willingness to learn and to say yes before she feels ready – whether that meant travelling the world with no plan, becoming a superyacht stewardess with no experience, or later, uprooting her life to build Boost Juice from scratch.

Her story reinforced a valuable message for business owners: you don’t need the perfect background to build something extraordinary – you need the drive to figure things out as you go.

Mindset Matters More Than Anything Else

Throughout her talk, one theme kept emerging: success is heavily influenced by the way we think.

Janine joked about the many excuses people give themselves – from imposter syndrome to blaming interest rates – and reminded the room that entrepreneurs don’t have the luxury of being victims of circumstance. Drawing on her time on Australian Survivor, she reinforced how powerful mental resilience can be.

“The mind quits long before the body. We all get in our own way – and we all have the ability to change that.”

Her message to the business community:
Be aware of how you talk to yourself. Choose ownership over excuses. And train your mindset the way you train any other skill.

Great People Make Great Businesses

Janine spoke passionately about surrounding yourself with the right people – in business and in life. Skill alone isn’t enough; the right attitude, accountability and cultural fit matter far more.

She encouraged leaders to recognise when someone simply isn’t suited to the role they’re in and to make confident decisions about repositioning or letting go.

Her analogy of her “lapdog who thinks he’s a guard dog” made the point clear: no matter how much someone wants to be great in a role, they won’t thrive if it’s the wrong fit.

Customer Experience Is the Real Differentiator

Although Boost Juice is now a global brand, Janine reminded everyone that it was built one customer at a time and that the businesses who win are those that obsess about the customer, especially when something goes wrong.

She called out the irony of companies claiming to be “customer‑led” while simultaneously placing customers on long holds, refusing refunds or making complaints difficult.

Her philosophy is simple:
If a customer feels they’ve had a bad experience, then it was a bad experience and it needs to be fixed promptly, without defensiveness.

This mindset, she believes, is a major reason Boost has maintained relevance and loyalty in such a competitive sector.

Adaptability Is No Longer Optional

One of the strongest themes of the morning was the need for businesses to constantly evolve.

Whether referencing COVID, digital disruption or AI, Janine emphasised that the world is changing faster than ever and businesses that rely on outdated thinking or “the way we’ve always done it” are at risk.

She encouraged attendees to explore new tools, embrace technology and stay willing to pivot.

“AI won’t take your job. But someone using AI might.”

A Morning of Real Talk and Fresh Perspective

Janine’s session was more than a keynote – it was a reminder of what’s possible when courage, curiosity, resilience and customer obsession come together. Her direct, humorous style left the room energised and motivated and her insights resonated deeply with the Sunshine Coast’s vibrant business community.

We thank Janine for sharing her time and wisdom, and we look forward to seeing how her lessons continue to inspire our local leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators.
