Sugar Road and Maud Street Upgrade – Community Update
Sugar Road and Maud Street are key travel routes, particularly to and from the CBD. The area has a history of crashes, lacks connected paths for people walking or riding and experiences traffic congestions for motorists and public transport users.
One of the key contributors to traffic congestion in the current single lane arrangement on Sugar Road is the vehicle queuing. Vehicles must stop and wait for other vehicles to turn across the single centre line, into homes and businesses. This in turn contributes to crashes and congestion along Sugar Road and the Sugar-Wises Roads roundabout.
2026 Interim Improvements
To improve traffic and safety conditions in the short-medium term and ahead of the project’s permanent upgrade, interim changes will be made to the section of Sugar Road between Oloway Crescent and Sugar-Wises Roads roundabout in early 2026.
Works will include line marking changes, minor footpath improvements, new cycle ramps and improvements to cycle lanes. This will result in some permanent changes to traffic and parking conditions.
To reduce inconvenience to our community, including Sugar Road businesses, all interim works will be undertaken as night works. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Sugar Road with traffic control in operation. Access will remain to home and businesses.
The community will be advised of the dates and times of the works in a future update.
